Alleviating the “Spaghetti”

Stagedge Improves DISTRIBUTION and QUALITY of Audio/Video Signals Around Event Space

SOLUTION BRIEF

•	Boston Corporate Event ProductionCreating superb audience experiences starts with strong partner relationships. A few weeks ago, we announced our latest technology partnership with Riedel Communications, a leading provider of live production tools in the media, sports, and entertainment industries.

This partnership is a true better-together story and exemplifies a collaboration that proves commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology to a broader audience. Together, we are setting new standards for innovation through this partnership.

Initially, when we had our first discovery call to talk about how we would promote this partnership we brought in two SME’s (Subject Matter Experts) from Stagedge to discuss the challenges they faced before implementing Riedel into our tech stack. We also talked about the products they used to address and solve those challenges. And, ultimately, what the benefits have been (thus far) since the implementation.

First up is Project Manager Corey Yacco:

CHALLENGE:

Headquartered in Tewksbury, MA, Stagedge is one of Massachusetts's premier full-service production companies dedicated to conceiving, creating, and executing immersive brand experiences through live, virtual, and hybrid events for enterprises around the world. As technology continues to progress and becomes more complex, there are many new and innovative products on the market to help engineers do their jobs better and more efficiently. “One of the most common challenges that we face on a job site is the neat and orderly distribution of audio/video signals around an event space,” says Corey Yacco, Project Manager at Stagedge. “We are always looking for better ways to implement technology into our workflows that will help alleviate the “spaghetti” of cabling, adaptors, and power supplies strewn around and under tech stations.”

SOLUTION:

Stagedge has been utilizing Riedel’s MediorNet MicroN and UHD products for their distribution of audio and video around an event space. “It has completely changed the way we wire and conduct our signal flow,” emphasized Yacco. “What used to be thousands of feet of SDI and XLR cables can now be trunked into slender fiber cables between racks. We have begun putting a MediorNet node in every rack we can muster, and with nothing but a single fiber you can carry up to 100Gbs per second of multiplexed video, audio, and network data!” When you put this into perspective, a single 1920x1080p signal uses around 3Gbs per second, which is only a tiny fraction of MediorNet’s bandwidth per fiber connection.

We are always looking for better ways to implement technology into our workflows that will help alleviate the “spaghetti” of cabling, adaptors, and power supplies strewn around and under tech stations.

For anyone that has not dealt with multiplexing before, it is a method of dividing data into different frequencies, so that they can be transported down the same fiber lines without interfering with each other. This is the backbone of the MediorNet system, and it is revolutionizing the broadcast and events industry with possibilities. The massive bandwidth this system provides has given Stagedge the ability to prewire all their racks and then just simply connect them on-site for distribution.

The biggest benefit of a MediorNet system that Stagedge has found so far is the extreme flexibility and adaptability of use cases.

“While MediorNet is the backbone of our video routing system, we are also utilizing Luminex Network Intelligence for our networking needs,” states Yacco. “These products allow us to share VLAN groups across many different racks and devices. This is also how we control our MediorNet and Artist/Bolero nodes, all while distributing communications, device control, and PoE around our systems.”

RESULT:

Stagedge has been working with MN (MediorNet) for a couple of years now, but it took them a few months to get everything implemented, tested, and ready to deploy. Now that it is all together, they need very little pre-production time to prep all these systems in their shop. “One of the things we like the most is that you can line up all the racks before a show and very quickly connect them to simulate and prep an upcoming live event,” says Yacco. “This has vastly improved our load in times due to the amount of meaningful presetting we can do beforehand.”

MediorNet is the backbone of our video routing system.

The biggest benefit of a MediorNet system that Stagedge has found so far is the extreme flexibility and adaptability of use cases. Their racks can now be separated by hundreds or even thousands of feet without hassle. They are even able to tie into existing building infrastructure where there are fiber tie-lines. The possibilities are truly endless for Stagedge and they are already looking to expand their MN inventory in the years ahead.
